Fostering With Barney's Furry Friends

Fostering saves lives. Our foster families are the heart of what we do, and we are deeply grateful for the time, care, and love they provide to our rescue dogs. Below is an overview of what our foster approval process looks like and what you can expect once you’re approved.

Foster Approval Process
Before fostering, all applicants go through a short approval process to ensure a safe and supportive environment for our dogs.

The foster approval process includes:

-
A phone interview
-
A home tour via video call
-
A reference check
-
Review of our Foster Manual

Once approved, you’ll be added to our WhatsApp Foster Group, which is where most of our communication, updates, and support take place.

How the Foster Process Works

Matching & Arrivals
A few days before each arrival date, we’ll share photos and information about the dogs coming in and work to match you with the foster dog that best fits your home and lifestyle.
Our dogs arrive once a month, always on a Saturday.

Pick-Up Location
Foster pick-up takes place in South Surrey usually on a Saturday afternoon.

Foster Starter Kit
You’ll receive a starter kit to help you get started, which includes:

-
Crate
-
Food & treats
-
Pee pads or litter
-
Poop bags
-
Toy
-
Collar, harness & leash
-
Apple AirTag (if needed)
-
Rescue ID tag

We also have food bowls and dog beds available.

Veterinary Care
A veterinary visit must be scheduled within 10 days of arrival.
Our primary vet clinic is in Surrey.
All veterinary care is coordinated through the rescue.

Helping Your Foster Get Adopted
Fosters play a key role in helping dogs find their forever homes. You’ll be asked to:

-
Take photos and videos for social media
-
Write a short bio describing your foster dog’s personality

When possible, we ask fosters to attend weekend adoption events in the Lower Mainland, as these significantly increase adoption chances.

Travel & Scheduling
If you’re planning a vacation or getaway, foster care arrangements must be made in advance, and it is up to the foster to find coverage. If you have travel plans we do recommend you wait with fostering.

Support & Training
If your foster dog is struggling to adjust, we will support you and help determine next steps. Please note that transitions may take time.
We also have a volunteer trainer available if behavioural or training support is needed.

Our Commitment — and What We Ask From Fosters
Our biggest ask of new fosters is commitment.
Rescue dogs have often experienced trauma, uncertainty, and instability. We cannot guarantee any specific behavior at the time of arrival, as each dog comes from a shelter or street environment.
We ask our fosters to approach fostering with a rescue mindset — patience, understanding, and a willingness to work through challenges with love and consistency. While we understand that not every placement works out, it’s important that fosters give the dog time to decompress and adjust before determining next steps. Your patience and dedication are life-changing for these dogs.
